Settle-Carlisle Railway

Take a ride on the Settle Carlisle Railway, the most beautiful, scenic rail journey in England to the high point of Garsdale Head. After collecting one of our bikes at Garsdale station a quiet country lane wends its way down Mallerstang Dale passing Pendragon Castle, the spectacular gorge at Stenkrith Bridge and along the Two Viaducts Cycleway into the historic market town of Kirkby Stephen. From here you head further down the Eden valley to the site of the famous horse fairs and the end of the trail at the lively market town of Appleby, where you board the train for your return journey. Read a visitor's report here.

Along the way you can savour swooping downhill on quiet country lanes, enjoy a picnic or check out the antique shops in Kirkby Stephen. Take a stroll by the River Eden on its way to Carlisle or simply drink in the peace and quiet of this aptly named valley, overlooked by the imposing Wild Boar Fell - and there's always the chance you may catch one of the regular STEAM SPECIALS that run over the line.

One of our bikes will be waiting for you at Garsdale station, complete with pannier bag, helmet and pump ready to go. The return train leaves Appleby at 5.00 so you have over 6 hours to complete the 24 mile trip, which allows for a leisurely pace and lots of stops, because there's a lot to see!
